Benefits of growing Lagerstroemia

Adaptability to Indian Climates :

The Lagerstroemia plant grows healthily in India’s tropical weather, tolerating high humidity, monsoon rains, and summer heat. It is drought-resistant once established, so you do not have to worry about it even if you forget to water it.

 Cultural and Medicinal Value

In traditional practices, its leaves are boiled to prepare herbal infusions believed to regulate blood sugar levels. Jarul plant’s flowers are used in religious ceremonies during weddings and festivals.

Air Purification

The Pride of India plant does an amazing job at trapping dust and pollutants, thereby improving air quality.

  Supports Wildlife

Jarul’s nectar-rich blooms attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and sunbirds.

 Easy to Care For

Unlike high-maintenance exotic plants, the Lagerstroemia thrives with basic care, making it ideal for busy homeowners and novice gardeners.

Care Tips for Lagerstroemia

Light and Placement

Lagerstroemia or Jarul plants require 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter regions, afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch. For balconies or terraces, choose west- or south-facing spots.

 Watering

Water young plants twice weekly during summer, ensuring the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Reduce frequency to once weekly in monsoon and winter. Mature trees can survive on rainwater alone in high-rainfall areas like Kerala.

 Soil Mix

To ensure healthy growth of Jarul plant, use a mix of garden soil, vermicompost, and sand in about 2:1:1 ratio. If using pots, add cocopeat to retain moisture.

 Fertilisation

Feed this plant with organic vermicompost or a balanced NPK fertilizer every 6 weeks from March to September.

Pruning

Prune after the flowering season (August to September) to maintain shape and remove dead branches. Light trimming encourages bushier growth in potted plants.

 Pest Management

Aphids and powdery mildew may affect leaves during humid months. Spray neem oil mixed with water, about 1 teaspoon per liter, weekly as a preventive measure. Improve airflow between plants to reduce fungal risks.
